Student Senate elected two new members Tuesday to fill a sophomore Senator position vacated by the resignation of Sam Cooper and a junior Senator position vacated by the resignation of Grace Brodrick.
Chris Reimer and Allie Lach, sophomores, were present at the meeting to express their interest in joining Student Senate. After a vote was conducted, Reimer was nominated to become the newest addition to the sophomore Senators.
Before a vote was taken, the Senate entered discussion, and Reimer was asked to share his qualifications to serve as a Senator.
Reimer listed multiple campus organizations in which he is involved and expressed an interest in using technology to further Senate’s goals.
“I’ve been the social chair of my fraternity, a Cardinal Blazer, a member of Pryor [Leadership Program], SIFE Technology chair … and I also have a lot of experience working with social media such as Facebook and Twitter,” Reimer said.
Reimer said that, as a first-year, he was too shy to run for a Senate position, but has always had a strong interest in joining Senate.
“I see a disconnect between Student Senate and the student body,” Reimer said, “so I want to use social media to make Senate’s work more fun and appealing to Jewell students.”
When asked what leadership qualities he could bring to Student Senate, Reimer said that he is creative, personable, task-oriented and good at listening to others.
Adam Al Douri was the only candidate present to run for the Junior Senator position, and was nominated and voted into the Senate by majority vote.
Al Douri was also asked to share his interest in joining the Senate before the vote was taken.
“I’ve always been interested in joining Senate, but never had time before this year,” Al Douri said. “I want to be a part of the push for the Bill of Rights and help conduct positive change on campus.”
Al Douri stated that he could bring a different perspective to the Senate.
“I have a sense of humor as well as an ability to represent the gay community of Jewell,” Al Douri said.
Student senate also approved a funds request by the Black Student Association for “Love and Soul Night,” an event to celebrate Black heritage and raise a donation for the Paseo Performing Arts Academy. BSA was granted $400 ($150 more than they requested) with the stipulation that the extra funds would go toward lowering ticket prices from $5 to $3 for William Jewell students.
