The Mating Call: What counts as sex?

Edward Scott, Jr.- Business Manager

Sex is sex: Most people would think that such a statement makes perfect sense, until we get into specifics.  I do not know how many times I have gotten into heated debates, particularly with females, over what counts as sexual activity and how that impacts their oh-so-cherished virginity.
It is important to stick with the basics: Sex is sex, and virginity means not having had sex, whether that be anal sex, vaginal sex or yes, oral sex.
If you do not believe me, let us go to Webster online, which defines “sex act” as being any act that is done with another for sexual gratification. According to Webster’s dictionary, if you garner sexual gratification through acts done with one person, five people, 15 people—separate or simultaneous—you have committed a sexual act. Sexual act equals no virginity.
However, there are a few issues with that definition: What constitutes sexual gratification? Does the act require both parties to have sexual gratification, or can it just be one of the participants? And does masturbation count?
The answer to the last question is no. I would agree with Webster’s suggestion that loss of virginity requires another person. Having “fun” by yourself still leaves you with a “V-Card” in your pocket.
Now, the major argument used by those persons who do not believe they have lost their virginity by giving or receiving oral sex—known by a variety of names—is that both persons did not garner sexual gratification. While it takes two to tango, only one person actually needs to be pleased in order for the act to count as sex. If such was not so, the estimated 70 percent of women who have never experienced an orgasm would still be considered virgins. Any sexual act equals lost virginity.
There needs to be a major removal of this preconceived notion that a hymen needs to be broken in order for a loss of virginity to take place. Here is what I am saying: If you have given or received oral sex, you are not a virgin. Let it go—as if you haven’t already.
