During the holiday break, the William Jewell men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed at the Central Missouri Invitational, hosted by the University of Central Missouri in Warrensburg, Mo. on January 20.
In the one-day meet, the Cardinals placed highly in a number of events. Maggie Swenson, sophomore, finished third in the 400 meters with a time of 1:01.98.
The Cardinal women also took three out of the four top spots in the 600 yard run with Shelby Pettz, junior, finishing first, and McKenzie Reagan and DeMarais Bradshaw, sophomores, finishing second and fourth respectively.
Jess Connery, junior, finished third in the 3000 meters with a time of 11:13:41 and Sara Shippy, senior, finished fourth in the finals of the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 9.39. Unfortunately, the women’s team could not overcome the competition and finished fourth out of five teams with 52.33 points. Emporia State won the women’s meet with 171 points.
On the men’s side, Alex Hughes, senior, finished third in the 200 meters while Clint Ederer, junior, finished fourth. Additionally, Ederer took second place in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.95 seconds. Ederer kept rolling in his next event, the 400 meters, which he won with a time of 50.96.
In a repeat of the women’s results, the Cardinal men also finished fourth while tallying 47 points. The host team emerged as the winner of the men’s meet, racking up 160 points on the day.
This weekend the Cardinals will compete in their next meet, the Mule Relays, also at the University of Central Missouri. The women will compete today, with the men’s team following on tomorrow.
“Since we can’t go to nationals every meet, this year is a good time to continue improving and making sure that we are ready for the conference meet,” Sarah Stadnik, junior thrower, said. “We have high expectations to do well and show everyone else in the conference what we are capable of.”
