College to hold first ‘Jewell Day of Service’
So far, the organized student groups participating in the event are Student Senate, Christian Student Ministries, the football team, Greek Life, Facilities Management and 36 alumni who have signed up on the alumni website.
Those coordinating the event are Buscher, Student Senate, CSM and Office of Alumni Relations. The idea for this event came from the Office of Alumni Relations, and they are basing it upon a National Day of Service, according to Buscher.
CSM and Student Senate have wanted for years to have a “spring service event that parallels Serve and Celebrate,” Buscher said. Buscher went on to explain, “There is a great track record with Serve and Celebrate, and so we have wanted to have something similar in the spring.”
The main difference between this service event and Serve and Celebrate is that there are at least 30 volunteer sites in the fall, with only 10 to15 people going to each site. Buscher said, “Though there are only nine sites for Jewell’s Day of Service, this will allow for more volun-teers per site.”
Buscher also explained that the April date is more attractive because the weather is nicer and the aspect of spring cleaning is in these organizations’ minds. On the other hand, Buscher noted, “That because of the April date, students may be less willing to give up a Saturday for service. Yet, what we can’t forget though, is that Jewell is service oriented, and we enjoy getting out there and helping the non-profits.”
When asked how many service events CSM coordinates annually, Buscher said, “Service is attached to so many things. I would guesstimate 12-20 projects annually. There is always something going on.”
Buscher is a coordinator of the many service events that occur in CSM and in other organizations, as well. Ultimately, Buscher is a resource for non-profits to get volunteers, as well for students to get involved with these organizations.
“I hear where there are needs, and then send willing volunteers,” Buscher said.
Jewell’s Day of Service is anticipated highly by the William Jewell community, so Buscher encourages students to bring their work gloves and be ready to serve.
